Booster Juice - Corporate Social Responsibility

On their website, they said at Booster Juice they are committed to social responsibility and taking an active role in the communities they live in. In fact, Booster Juice was founded on the principals of family – that is why they are taking an active role in getting involved with causes they believe in, especially those involving their most important asset: children.

Following is a list of some of the charities and events they took part in to raise funds to help the community. They are:
  1. Alberta Cancer Foundation and Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation: raised $90,000 from the longest softball game ever
  2. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF): for every goal the Oilers scored in the Stanley Cup, they contribute $25 to the JDRF foundation
  3. Easter Seals: in 2011, Booster Juice launched their inaugural campaign raising $35,894 for Easter Seals programs and services across the country
  4. Booster Juice teamed up with Discovery Toys for the 2nd Annual TOY RAISER. Raised $20,000 to purchase toys, books and games for sick kids to brighten their hospital stay
Click on the links below to read more on some of the amazing events they have contributed to:

To contact them about getting involved in your charity or event, use the “contact” form in the Talk Section of their site, www.boosterjuice.com.

So, its clear that Booster Juice is not just doing business for profit, they are also a good corporate citizen. On their website, they said that any charity or organisation can contact them so that they can help to raise money for the less fortunate, isn't that a wonderful gesture on their part?

Booster Juice Jets Off to South America

Well, unlike our RIM counterparts, Booster Juice is not holding back. They are looking for potential markets everywhere around the globe and not surprisingly; their new target is two stores in Curitibia, Brazil. Moreover, they already have the Brazilian Thunder smoothies which are a blend of what the Brazilian should enjoy among the many varieties on offer.

An interesting point to note is that they have strategically opened these stores ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics which will be hosted in Brazil. Mr. Wishewan’s dream is to increase brand awareness of Booster Juice globally, what a more opportune time to do it than before the FIFA World Cup and Olympics?

All this is in addition to new franchise expansions in Mexico which I didn’t mention earlier. Mr. Wishewan hopes to expand his franchise to the United Kingdom and Qatar in the near future. He believes that global expansion will not hurt the company, but rather be beneficial in many ways. Furthermore, he said his goal was always to be an international company, yet being cautious; I suppose in the sense of maintaining control and ensuring the business is successful in each country before expanding in many countries and then realising a few of them aren’t doing so well.

Do you think that Booster Juice will gain worldwide brand recognition? They are already in four of the seven continents, viz.: North America, South America, Europe and Asia. What are their odds of being in every continent?

Booster Juice Fit Kids Foundation

Booster Juice Fit Kids Foundation is a new charitable organisation formed by Booster Juice. The organisation will primarily focus on obesity and awareness around the issue.

Dale Wishewan, CEO and President of Booster Juice said, “Right now there is no real charity or foundation across Canada that is doing anything with childhood obesity and it one of the greatest things happening right now in Canada.”

He also said, “We think it’s something that can be prevented more so than cancer or diabetes – which you have no means of controlling. We think obesity can be controlled, so if we can help through the form of education and funding through our foundation, it was just a natural tie-in for us.”

The organisation has plans to provide the following in the future:
  • Lunch programs for schools
  • Days where all proceeds from sales will go towards the foundation
  • Educational information on healthy living and eating
  • Celebrity association

Moreover, Booster Juice is hoping to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes for individuals at a very young age with the hope that they will lead a healthier life. I think personally it is a great initiative by Booster Juice to give back to the community by focusing on our kids. What do you think of the foundation and the initiative taken by Booster Juice?

Dale Wishewan - Entrepreneur of the Year

Dale Wishewan, President and CEO of Booster Juice, received the Foodservice and Hospitality Industry’s prestigious award for Entrepreneur of the Year 2005. He was also presented with the highly-touted Prairie Region Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year award from Ernst and Young. Isn’t that amazing? Only six years after opening his first store, that marks an outstanding achievement for someone who believed in himself. It started in his garage when he was whipping up smoothie flavours and his family and friends called him crazy for quitting a stable, well-paying job to open a juice bar.

Moreover, we all know about his resounding success with over 200 stores worldwide. However, he describes himself as an optimist. He didn’t have a business plan when he opened his first store in November, 1999 in Edmonton, Canada. Being a Canadian himself, he knew Canadians are very much value-driven. His family were skeptical and told him that no one is going to pay four bucks for a drink. Nonetheless, it proved that customers are willing to pay that much for a healthy and tasty alternative.

His dream is to open 400 stores in Canada; do you think he will succeed? Why?

Fresh Fruits as a Healthy Alternative

Interesting, I came across an article on the yahoo website that encourages us to eat more strawberries. According to the article published by Julie Daniluk, there are five reasons to eat more strawberries:
  1. Reduces the risk of degenerative disease:  strawberries are high in folic acid which is great for pregnant mothers too. Certain medications deplete the folic acids in your body which can be replenish by eating strawberries. It will ensure you maintain your cognitive capabilities.
  2. Reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease:
    • it suppresses the inflammatory responses of the body
    • reduces our risks of hypertension by lowering LDL colesterol
  3. Reduces stress: strawberries has 100% vitamin C of our recommended daily intake. Studies show when vitamin C is consumed during times of stress, it decreases our body's blood pressure back to normal.
  4. Prevents bone loss: strawberries are high in potassium which is great for preserving calcium thereby preventing bone loss as we age.
  5. High in antioxidants: strawberries contain anthrocyanin, which protects us from the damaging effects of our environment, especially the sun.
We are constantly bombarded by the media about the health benefits of fresh fruits. As such, all fruits give us different nutrients. Strawberry is only one of them which I thought I might share with you. For those of you who are not fruit lovers, there are alternative ways to get the required nutrients to preserve your body’s health. Why not try a smoothie?

Smoothies are a healthy way to quench your thirst and give you a boost. When it is blended with other fruits and a touch of yogurt, you wouldn’t know if you are consuming a fruit that you would not eat otherwise. It tastes that great!

Booster Juice: Who are they targeting?

The share natural fruit juices would cause the "common man" to think that Booster Juice’s target audience are exercise and bodybuilding fanatics. However, a list of FAQs which can we found by clicking on this link: boosterjuice.com/pdfs/faq.pdf, suggests that their target group is not only teenagers around the ages of 18 – 26 who are likely to enjoy a good tasting thirst quencher, but also includes: pregnant women, persons allergic to nuts (there is a minimal chance of their ingredients being exposed to nuts), vegetarians, diabetics, health conscious individuals, athletes, kids, and parents.

Evidently, their target group consists of individuals from different demographics, cultures, sexes, lifestyles, and conditions. As such, they provide a variety of menu choices to cater for the needs of those individuals, some of which includes:

  • Smoothies (high protein, power, berry, tropical, life choice, spirit, high protein superfood and superfood
  • Juices (orange, apple, carrot; ginger hammer; red sunrise, green hornet; maui juice; Tahiti squeeze; custom creation)
  • Food offerings (chicken Panini, tuna wrap, egg scrambler wrap, booster bakes, steak and egg scrambler wrap, Greek vegetarian wrap, etc.)
  • Shakers (wheatgrass, acai NRG, macha)
  • Other products (yogurt blenz, acai berry bowl, Zola acai)

My Booster Juice Experience

As I promised in my last blog post, it was quite gratifying to get some valuable insights and hands on experience of this "business in a blender". My first booster juice was an energy booster which was a blend of Korean ginseng and bee pollen. I have to admit it taste great. I love the natural flavour not to mention the health benefits. Also, a cold booster juice on a hot summer afternoon was quite gratifying to the taste buds. The layout of the business is fabulous with lots of educational pamphlets and brochures.

However, it was a sad scenario when I visited the business; there weren’t a lot of people buying or at least willing to try it. Why do you think there is hardly any line-up at Booster Juice franchises? Have you ever visited a Booster Juice location before and what was your experience?
